Teil A, Das Wichtigste in Kürze

Was ist NODI?

Was passiert mit Sprachnachrichten?

Rechtsgrundlage Art. 6 Abs. 1 lit. b DSGVO (Vertragserfüllung)

  2. Übertragung: Verschlüsselte Übertragung (TLS) an unsere Server.
  3. Server-Speicherung: Verschlüsselte Speicherung (AES-256) bis zur Zustellung, maximal 90 Tage ab Aufnahmedatum.

Daten Audioinhalt (OGG), Metadaten (Absender, Empfänger, Zeitstempel, Dauer, Zustellstatus)

Privacy Policy

NoDi GmbH, applicable to de.nodi.kids, the NODI app and the NODI Flip device (→ Safety information)

Last updated: 19 June 2026

Part A, The key points at a glance

This summary gives you a quick overview. The complete and legally authoritative information can be found in Part B.

Who is responsible?

NoDi GmbH, c/o Betahaus, Rudi-Dutschke-Straße 23, 10969 Berlin, Germany. For any questions about data protection, you can reach us at help@nodi.kids.

What is NODI?

NODI Flip is a minimal-screen device for children aged 5 to 12. Parents manage the device via the NODI app, send and receive voice messages, and decide who may communicate with their child. Children never create their own accounts; the contracting party and account holder is always the parent or legal guardian.

What data do we process?

Only what the service needs: your account data (name, email), the child profile you create (first name only, optionally a photo), voice messages, technical device data, and order and payment data when you make a purchase. We do not collect your child's date of birth, we do not collect location data (no GPS, no cell tower analysis), and the NODI Flip has no camera and no always-on microphone.

What happens to voice messages?

Voice messages are transmitted in encrypted form, temporarily stored in encrypted form on our servers, and automatically deleted no later than 90 days after recording. The last 50 messages remain stored in encrypted form on the NODI Flip until they are deleted or the device is reset. We do not listen to, analyse, transcribe or market voice messages. Parents also cannot listen to the content of chats between their child and other contacts (other than their own chats) via the app; those messages can only be played on the NODI Flip itself.

Where is data stored?

In Google Cloud (Firebase) data centres within the European Union. EU law (GDPR) applies. We only use individual service providers based outside the EU with appropriate safeguards (in particular EU Standard Contractual Clauses); details in Part B, Section 8.

Advertising and profiling of children?

No. We do not sell data, we do not create advertising profiles of children, and we do not show children advertising. There is no tracking on the NODI Flip or in areas aimed at children. Optional data uses (e.g. app usage statistics, marketing emails) are switched off by default and require your explicit consent, which you can withdraw at any time.

Your rights:

Access, rectification, erasure, restriction, data portability, objection and withdrawal of consent, at any time via the app settings or by email to help@nodi.kids. You can also lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority; the authority responsible for us is the Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (BlnBDI).

Our commitment:

We are committed to complying with applicable data protection law, in particular the GDPR, the German Federal Data Protection Act (BDSG) and the German Telecommunications and Digital Services Data Protection Act (TDDDG), and we design our product according to the principles of data minimisation and "privacy by default".

1. Controller and contact

The controller within the meaning of Art. 4(7) GDPR is:
NoDi GmbH
c/o Betahaus, Rudi-Dutschke-Straße 23, 10969 Berlin, Germany
Commercial register: Local Court (Amtsgericht) Berlin-Charlottenburg, HRB 265239 B
Represented by the managing directors Pascal Leonard Blum and Mathieu Caudal
Email for data protection requests: help@nodi.kids

We have not appointed a data protection officer because, based on our assessment, the requirements of Art. 37 GDPR and Section 38 BDSG are not currently met. We review this assessment at least once a year. Please send data protection requests to help@nodi.kids.

2. Scope and definitions

This privacy policy applies to:
the website and online shop at de.nodi.kids ("Website"),
the NODI app for iOS and Android ("App"), including guest accounts,
the NODI Flip device in the WiFi and WiFi + LTE versions ("Device") and the NODI Tracking Lanyard accessory,
our customer support and our communication with you.

"Parent account" means the account of an adult (at least 18 years old) who sets up a device and manages child profiles. "Guest account" means an account that, at the parents' invitation, can only exchange voice messages with an approved child (e.g. grandparents). "Child profile" means the child's profile created by the parents within their account; children themselves do not create accounts and do not enter into contracts with us.

3. Our principles

Data minimisation: We only collect data that is necessary to provide the service. For the child, we only record the first name, optionally a profile picture, and the link to the device serial number. We do not collect a date of birth.

Privacy by default: All optional data processing is switched off by default.

No commercial use of children's data: We do not sell personal data, we do not profile children, and we do not direct advertising at children.

No content analysis: We do not listen to voice messages or analyse their content, neither manually nor automatically.

Commitment: We are committed to complying with applicable data protection law, in particular Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR), the BDSG and the TDDDG.

4. Hosting, data centre and jurisdiction

We run the backend infrastructure for our app and devices, databases, authentication and push services on Google Cloud Platform (Firebase). Data is processed in data centres within the European Union (EU region). The European Union is therefore the relevant jurisdiction for storing and processing your data, and the GDPR applies.

All data transfers are encrypted in transit (TLS); data is stored encrypted (AES-256), both on our servers and on the device. Some service providers process data partly outside the EU; the services concerned, their purposes and the safeguards are listed exhaustively in Sections 7 and 8.

Server and access logs (e.g. IP address, timestamp, endpoint accessed) are generally stored for 12 months to ensure security, stability and abuse prevention (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) and are then deleted automatically.

5. Individual processing activities in detail

For each processing activity, we tell you: which data, for what purpose, on what legal basis, how long it is stored and who receives it.

5.1 Visiting the website

Data
IP address, date/time, pages visited, browser/device type (technically required access data)
Purpose
Delivering the website, stability, IT security
Legal basis
Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in secure operation)
Retention
We process technically required access data to deliver and secure the website; we delete our own server/access logs after 12 months (see Section 4). The retention period of platform-side logs is determined by Shopify as the platform operator and is governed by the data processing agreement concluded with Shopify.
Recipients
Shopify (shop platform), Cloudflare (CDN/security)

Cookies and tracking technologies on the website are described exhaustively in Section 12.

5.2 Account creation and account management (parent and guest accounts)

There is a single registration process for all users. The role (parent/admin or guest) is only determined by subsequent actions (setting up a device or redeeming an invitation code).

Data
Name (first name is sufficient), email address, profile picture/avatar, region/language/time zone; when signing in via Apple or Google: the sign-in data you have released there; for guest accounts additionally a relationship label (e.g. "Grandma") and the link to the approved child
Purpose
Providing your account, authentication, device and contact management
Legal basis
Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (performance of contract)
Retention
For as long as the account is active. When an account is deleted, the data is permanently deleted immediately, without a grace period. We delete inactive accounts after 24 months of inactivity: you receive a warning email and a further 30 days; the data is then permanently deleted.
Recipients
Google Cloud/Firebase (hosting, authentication)

When you sign in with Sign in with Apple or Google Sign-In, Apple or Google respectively are independent controllers for the sign-in process within their services.

5.3 Child profiles

As a parent or legal guardian, you create child profiles yourself when setting up the device. Details on consent can be found in Section 6.

Data
The child's first name (no surname), optionally a profile picture/avatar, linked device serial number, message queue, content lists. No date of birth is collected. An optional age range (e.g. 5-7, 8-10, 11-12) is technically supported but is not currently collected.
Purpose
Personalising the device, assigning messages and contacts, making the child recognisable to approved contacts
Legal basis
Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (performance of the contract concluded with the parent or legal guardian). Where consent is additionally required for processing the child's data, it is given by the parents as holders of parental responsibility (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR); the principles of Art. 8 GDPR are respected.
Retention
Until the child profile or the parent account is deleted; deletion is immediate and permanent, including all of the child's voice messages
Recipients
Google Cloud/Firebase (hosting); the child's first name may appear in push notifications (see 5.7)

5.4 Voice messages

The complete life cycle of a voice message:

Recording: Recording only starts when someone actively navigates on the device (Voice messages → Contact → Record message) or starts a recording in the app. The microphone is never permanently active; there is no wake-word detection, no sound detection and no ambient recording. While recording, the display clearly shows "Recording…" with an animated waveform. The recording is stored in encrypted form on the device.

Transmission: Encrypted transmission (TLS) to our servers.

Server storage: Encrypted storage (AES-256) until delivery, for a maximum of 90 days from the recording date.

Deletion: An automatic deletion job removes messages from the server after 90 days at the latest. If a sender's access (e.g. a guest's) is revoked before delivery, undelivered messages are deleted from the server immediately.

On the device: The last 50 messages remain stored in encrypted form on the NODI Flip until they are deleted manually or the device is reset to factory settings.

Important transparency notes:

Transmission is encrypted in transit and storage is encrypted, but messages are not end-to-end encrypted. We use this solely for delivery. We do not listen to, analyse, transcribe or market voice messages. Our support team also has no access to message content. Technically, the managing directors and the CTO, as the legally responsible persons, have access to the database. In practice, however, they only access the database if there is a valid reason and the customer has consented in the individual case. The development team has restricted access to the database and the so-called production environment. This access is needed to install new software (deployment). New software is developed and tested in a separate environment without real customer data.

Message content is private between your Flip and the respective contact (app). The app only shows the Flip's contacts and the messages exchanged between the parent and the child. Messages from other contacts can only be played on the NODI Flip. The child can additionally set an optional device PIN; if it is forgotten, parents can view it in the app.

As individual communications, voice messages are protected by the secrecy of telecommunications (Sections 3 et seq. TDDDG). We only process the content and detailed circumstances of communications to the extent necessary for delivery.

Data
Audio content (OGG), metadata (sender, recipient, timestamp, duration, delivery status)
Purpose
Transmitting and delivering voice messages between approved contacts
Legal basis
Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (performance of contract); where consent is required for the child's data, it is given by the parents (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR); the principles of Art. 8 GDPR are respected; Sections 3 et seq. TDDDG
Retention
Server: max. 90 days from recording; device (recipient): last 50 messages until deletion/factory reset; metadata: until the respective profile/account is deleted
Recipients
Google Cloud/Firebase (EU)

5.5 Device data, telemetry and Wi-Fi credentials

Data
Firmware version, device serial number, device settings (for management via the NODI app), functional usage events (message sent/received, playback started); stored locally on the device: daily usage time to enforce parental usage limits
Not collected
GPS/location data (no GPS sensor), cell IDs (LTE version: no cell data is stored), camera images (no camera), ambient audio, battery level, Wi-Fi password and signal strength (not transmitted to our servers)
Device crash/error logs
Only shared with your active involvement: you can voluntarily send device logs to us and our software development partners via the support workflow (legal basis: Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR). There is no automatic crash reporting SDK.
Wi-Fi credentials
The SSID and password are stored AES-encrypted on the device. In the cloud, we store only the SSID (for display/management in the app); the Wi-Fi password never leaves the device. The Wi-Fi password is transmitted from the smartphone to the device during setup in encrypted form only; device provisioning itself is also encrypted.
Purpose
Device functionality, management via the app, troubleshooting
Legal basis
Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR; for voluntarily shared logs Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR; Section 25(2) TDDDG for technically necessary access to device information
Retention
All telemetry data is deleted when the device is deleted in the NODI app
Recipients
Google Cloud/Firebase. Voluntarily shared device logs are analysed exclusively by us and are not passed on to third parties. Firmware/OTA updates are delivered via Amazon Web Services (AWS, USA); only the device manufacturer, model, MAC address, IP address and firmware version are processed, no account or profile data.

5.6 Spotify integration and audio content

The NODI Flip works as a Spotify Connect speaker. It is controlled via the parents' Spotify app. We receive no Spotify account data: the integration uses the Spotify eSDK; no Spotify login takes place on our servers, and no child profile data is transmitted to Spotify.

Data
Functional metadata: Spotify playlist/track IDs, file identifiers of offline audio content. No usage or telemetry data about audio content.
Purpose
Providing the audio content set up by the parents on the device
Legal basis
Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR
Retention
Until the device or account is deleted
Recipients
Spotify AB (track/playlist IDs only, no user data); Cloudflare (delivery of offline audio content: IP address, content IDs)

5.7 Push notifications

Data
Your smartphone's push token; the notification content may include your child's first name (e.g. to show who a message is from)
Purpose
Informing you about new messages and account events
Legal basis
Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR; controlled via your operating system's notification settings
Retention
Push tokens are refreshed each time the app starts; inactive tokens are deleted after account deletion
Recipients
Apple Inc. (APNs, iOS) and Google LLC (Firebase Cloud Messaging, Android), both via Firebase. Because the child's first name may be included in the notification, we point this out explicitly.

Legal basis
Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (contract); Art. 6(1)(c) GDPR (retention obligations under commercial and tax law)
Retention
Accounting and tax-relevant data: for the statutory retention periods, currently 8 years for accounting vouchers and invoices and 10 years for books of account and annual financial statements (Section 147 German Fiscal Code (AO), Section 257 German Commercial Code (HGB), Section 14b German VAT Act (UStG)), starting at the end of the respective calendar year
Recipients
Shopify Inc. (shop platform, transactional emails), Shopify Payments and Stripe, Inc. (payment processing), Byrd Technologies GmbH (fulfilment EU), Aftership Ltd (returns EU & USA), shipping providers (e.g. DHL and DPD: name, delivery address and email address for delivery and shipping notifications; no phone number)

The processing serves solely to handle your request and to improve the quality of our responses (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

5.11 Marketing communication (only with consent)

Data
Email address, name, language, order history, subscription status
Purpose
Newsletter, product updates, marketing emails
Legal basis
Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR, only with your explicit consent. The "Product updates" and "Marketing communication" toggles are switched off by default at registration.
Withdrawal
At any time via the unsubscribe link in every email or via the "Manage consents" link in the account settings (leads to a self-service page)
Retention
Until withdrawal; proof of consent is logged in accordance with Art. 7(1) GDPR
Recipients
Klaviyo, Inc. (processing in the USA, certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework)

6. Children's data

NODI is a product for children, but not a service that children use or purchase on their own:

Children never create their own accounts. The contracting parties and account holders are exclusively adults (at least 18 years old).

Child profiles are created by the parents. The child's data is processed to perform the contract concluded with the parents or legal guardians (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). Where consent is additionally required, it is given by the parents as holders of parental responsibility (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR); the principles of Art. 8 GDPR are respected. Consent is given by a clear affirmative action when creating the child profile: when creating the profile, you use the "Confirm" button, below which the consent text is clearly displayed, to confirm that you are the child's parent or legal guardian and that you consent to the processing of the child's data to provide the service in accordance with this privacy policy.

Data minimisation: First name, optionally a picture, nothing more. No date of birth, no location, no biometric analysis.

No profiling, no advertising: We do not create personality or advertising profiles of children and do not show children advertising. We do not use any tracking technologies on the device or in areas aimed at children. There are no web pages aimed at children on nodi.kids.

Communication only with approved contacts: The child can only communicate with contacts that the parents have explicitly approved. Guests can only communicate with the child after the parents have confirmed them and cannot see the child's activity or history data. This also applies to messages between two children (Flip-to-Flip): these are only possible if the parents of both children have approved the connection; to do so, one family creates an invitation code in the NODI app, which the parents of the other family redeem. Either family can end the connection at any time.

Visible recording: An audio recording is always recognisable to the child (display indicator, active navigation required). There is no hidden recording or eavesdropping function; the NODI Flip is not a surveillance device.

Deletion: Parents can delete the child profile at any time; all of the child's data, including all voice messages, is then deleted immediately and permanently.

App stores: The Apple App Store and Google Play process app-level information (installations, crashes, device model, OS version) as independent controllers. We do not pass in-app user data on to the app stores.

Sales via Amazon: If you buy a NODI Flip via Amazon, Amazon is independently responsible for order processing. We only become the controller once the device is registered in the NODI app; we do not transfer any data to Amazon after the device has been registered.

8. Transfers to third countries

Our primary data storage is in the EU (Section 4). Some service providers process data in third countries: Stripe, Klaviyo, Microsoft Clarity, Anthropic and Amazon Web Services process data in the USA; Shopify stores data in the EU with ongoing transfers to the USA and Canada; Gorgias processes your support data in the EU region; as Gorgias is a US company, Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework additionally apply to any access from the USA. Google Analytics collects data from EU devices via EU servers and uses the IP address only for an initial location determination on EU servers; storage and further processing take place in the USA, and the service is only used with your consent. We base transfers to the USA on the adequacy decision for the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework (Art. 45 GDPR) where the provider is certified, and otherwise on EU Standard Contractual Clauses (Art. 46(2)(c) GDPR) together with an assessment of supplementary safeguards (transfer impact assessment). We base transfers to Canada on the European Commission's adequacy decision. You can request a copy of the safeguards via help@nodi.kids.

10. Your rights as a data subject

You have the following rights with regard to your personal data; as a parent, you can also exercise these rights on behalf of your child:

Access (Art. 15 GDPR), including a copy of the data;

Rectification of inaccurate data (Art. 16 GDPR); you can change the name and picture of the child profile directly in the app at any time;

Erasure (Art. 17 GDPR); account, child profile and device deletion are available directly in the app and take effect immediately and permanently;

Restriction of processing (Art. 18 GDPR);

Data portability (Art. 20 GDPR);

Objection to processing based on Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (Art. 21 GDPR); you can object to direct marketing at any time without giving reasons.

To exercise your rights, an informal message to help@nodi.kids is sufficient. To protect your data, especially your child's data, we may ask you to verify your identity before responding. We respond without undue delay and within one month at the latest (Art. 12(3) GDPR).

Right to lodge a complaint: You have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR). The authority responsible for us is the Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (BlnBDI), Alt-Moabit 59-61, 10555 Berlin, Germany, www.datenschutz-berlin.de. You can also contact the supervisory authority in your place of residence.

11. Withdrawal of consent

You can withdraw any consent you have given at any time with effect for the future (Art. 7(3) GDPR), including consent for marketing, product updates, app usage analytics, cookie categories, shared device logs and the processing of your child's data. Withdrawing is as easy as giving consent:

Optional consents: via the "Manage consents" link in the app's account settings (leads to a self-service page, no need to contact support) or via the unsubscribe link in every email;

Cookies: at any time via the "Cookie settings" button on the website (Section 12);

Consent regarding your child's data: by deleting the child profile in the app or by messaging help@nodi.kids.

After a withdrawal, we stop the processing concerned; data for which the withdrawn consent was the only legal basis is deleted. The lawfulness of processing carried out before the withdrawal remains unaffected.

12. Cookies and tracking on our website

This section applies to the website/shop at de.nodi.kids. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies in the NODI app or on the NODI Flip; app usage analytics is based exclusively on consent (Section 5.12).

Consent management: We use the consent tool Pandectes (Shopify-native). On your first visit, your consent is obtained before any non-essential cookies are set (Section 25(1) TDDDG, Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR). All non-essential categories are disabled by default; "Reject all" is offered with equal prominence to "Accept all". You can change or withdraw your choice at any time via the permanently available "Cookie settings" button (footer).

We use the services of Klar Insights GmbH, Clemensstr. 2, 80803 Munich, Germany, a SaaS provider of business intelligence solutions for e-commerce companies. On our behalf, Klar Insights GmbH collects, processes and stores data on this website and its subpages (user and session IDs, email address, IP address, online identifiers (cookie ID, device ID)) for reach measurement and statistical analysis. We have concluded a data processing agreement with Klar Insights GmbH for this purpose.

The personal data is collected on the legal basis of consent pursuant to Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR.

If the user gives consent, the data to be processed is collected on a user-specific basis, taking into account Section 25(1) sentence 1 TDDDG.

The following cookies are used for the different types of collection described above.

Cookie objection

To object to the use of Klar! Insights in general, please use this link. This sets a cookie named "september_do_not_track" from the domain "nodi.kids". Please do not delete it, as we can otherwise not ensure that you are not tracked by Klar.

Information on data protection and data use by Klar is available at: https://app.getklar.com/legal/data-protection

The complete and always up-to-date cookie table (cookie names and retention period per cookie) is generated dynamically by our consent tool Pandectes and can be viewed at any time via the "Cookie settings" button.

Bot protection and captcha services: To protect against abuse and automated access, our platforms use bot protection services: Cloudflare Turnstile and hCaptcha (integrated by Shopify, in particular at checkout) and Google reCAPTCHA (integrated by the contact form of our support provider Gorgias). These services process technical connection data (e.g. IP address, interaction patterns) to distinguish humans from bots. Legal basis: Section 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG, Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (abuse prevention). With Google reCAPTCHA, data may be transferred to the USA (Data Privacy Framework).

Children and tracking: There are no pages aimed at children on nodi.kids; our website is aimed at parents. We do not use tracking technologies that could reach children.

13. Data security

We take technical and organisational measures pursuant to Art. 32 GDPR, including:

Passwordless sign-in: You sign in via an email confirmation link or Sign in with Apple/Google. There are no NODI passwords and no factory default passwords, neither for your account nor on the device, that would need to be changed or could be intercepted.

Encryption in transit (TLS) for all data transfers;

Encryption of stored data with AES-256, on servers and on the device (including voice messages, contact data, Wi-Fi credentials);

Signed and authenticated over-the-air firmware updates;

Access control: our employees only access user data with your explicit consent;

Remote wipe: if the device is lost, it can be deleted from the app; the data is wiped the next time it connects to the internet;

Certification of the NODI Flip under the EN 18031 series of standards (cybersecurity requirements of the EU Radio Equipment Directive) and compliance with the requirements of the UK Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Act 2022 (PSTI);

Independent IT security assessment of the NODI Flip and the NODI app by Schutzwerk GmbH (April 2026);

Notification of personal data breaches to the competent supervisory authority within 72 hours and, in case of high risk, notification of the affected persons without undue delay.

You can report security vulnerabilities to us at any time at development@nodi.kids; the procedure is described in our Vulnerability Disclosure Policy (de.nodi.kids/security).

14. Obligation to provide data

Providing account and order data is necessary to conclude the contract and use the service; without it, we cannot provide the service. All other information (e.g. the child's profile picture, age range, optional consents) is voluntary.

15. No automated decision-making

No automated decision-making, including profiling, within the meaning of Art. 22 GDPR takes place.

16. Changes to this privacy policy

We update this privacy policy when our processing activities, the service or the legal situation change. We will inform you of material changes in advance by email and/or prominently in the app. The current version, including its date, is available at any time at de.nodi.kids/pages/datenschutzerklarung and in the app, where it can be accessed, printed and saved.

Appendix: NODI explained for kids

This part is written for children. Parents: feel free to read it together with your child. Reading it out loud is very much allowed!

What happens to your voice messages?

When you record a voice message on your NODI Flip, we send it, safely wrapped up, to the person it's meant for, like your mum, dad, grandma or grandpa. Only the people your parents have chosen can send you messages or hear your messages.

Does NODI listen to your messages?

No. We don't listen to your messages, we don't read along and we don't sell anything about you. After 90 days at the latest, our computers automatically delete your messages from our servers.

Is your NODI Flip always listening?

No. Your Flip only records when you hold down the record button. While you're recording, the display shows "Recording…". There is no secret microphone, no camera and no location tracking.

What do we know about you?

Very little, only what your parents have entered: your first name and, if your parents want, a picture. Your parents can delete it again at any time.

Any more questions?

Ask your parents, and if you want to ask us something together, write to us at help@nodi.kids. We'd love to hear from you.

NoDi GmbH, c/o Betahaus, Rudi-Dutschke-Straße 23, 10969 Berlin, Allemagne.

Tu as encore des questions ?
